Carlos Pedro Briceño

Carlos Pedro Briceño’s story started 20 years ago. After returning to his home country of Venezuela following his university completion in Australia, it only took one jump with a friend for him to be completely hooked on skydiving. However, since he had no gear, he needed to get a job in order to support his new found passion. And that’s exactly what he did.

Briceño used his Business Management degree to land himself a job in the lucrative oil industry. For a few years he focused on his work during the week and skydiving on the weekends. It didn’t come without sacrifice—he had to travel 5 hours in order to jump—but it was worth it. Eventually, skydiving replaced everything for Briceño.

When his contract ended with the oil company, Briceño put everything into skydiving. In 2004, just five years after his skydiving career began, Briceno landed a role as co-host for a Venezuelan Extreme Sports television series, “Aventura Sin Limite” (Adventure without Limit). His sense of adventure that started with surfing as a kid expanded from there.

His love for skydiving grew into BASE Jumping after he completed his first jump in Venezuela. It was a 310-foot jump and the adrenaline rush he felt inspired him to keep jumping. After getting his own gear, he went on his first BASE Jumping adventure to Europe in 2009. For him, what separates skydiving from BASE Jumping is the ability to connect with nature and the accessibility of not needed to rely on a plane to get to his destination. Plus, no matter how many times he jumps from the same spot, with BASE Jumping, the experience is always different.

Of course, with any extreme sport, fear and safety are two big topics of discussion. Even through Briceño completes around 80 BASE Jumps in the span of three months and 700-1000 skydives over the course of a year, the sense of fear is very much present for him. However, he credits the fear for keeping him safe. For Briceño, the fear he experiences keeps him respectful of the sport and it reminds him of the importance of being present.

This doesn’t just apply to skydiving and BASE Jumping, though. What keeps him grounded is asking himself what he wants to do when he wakes up every day. He’s lost a lot of people in his life due to the intensity of the sport he chose, and for that reason, he’s not afraid of dying, but of not being able to play.

His goal as a coach is to teach this philosophy to his students. As an Accelerated Free Fall (“AAF”) instructor of 15 years, Briceño has the ability to coach people who are brand new to skydiving as well as experienced divers. His favorite thing to teach is free flying, which is where experienced skydivers can learn different maneuvers in the air.
